Accident in Bali: Which Hospital and What Happens Next
After a motorbike accident in Bali, if the rider is
unconscious, bleeding heavily, or has a possible head, neck, or spine
injury, do not move them — call 119/118 (or a private hospital
ambulance) and get them to a hospital with a 24-hour ER and trauma
capacity, such as BIMC, Siloam, Kasih Ibu, or Prof. Ngoerah for major
trauma. For road rash, minor fractures, and stable injuries, an
international-facing private hospital like BIMC is usually the smoothest
option for foreigners. Bring the passport and insurance details, and be
ready for a deposit request — a coordinator can request an insurance
guarantee so you are not paying out of pocket for a serious injury.
Scooter and motorbike crashes are, by a wide margin, the most common
reason foreign visitors end up in a Bali hospital. Loose gravel, sudden
rain, unfamiliar traffic, and (too often) riding without proper
experience or a helmet combine into thousands of injuries every year. If
it has just happened to you or someone with you, here is exactly what to
do and what to expect.
At the scene: the first few
minutes
- Do not remove the helmet of an unconscious rider
unless they are not breathing — improper removal can worsen a neck
injury. - Do not move anyone with a suspected head, neck, or
back injury unless they are in immediate danger from traffic. - Control bleeding with firm pressure and a clean
cloth. - Call for help — 119/118/112, or a private hospital
ambulance for faster English-speaking dispatch. - Photograph the scene if you safely can (the other
vehicle, the road, plates). This helps later with police reports and
insurance.
Road rash — the widespread grazing typical of these crashes — looks
alarming and is highly prone to infection in Bali’s tropical climate.
Even “minor” cases need proper cleaning and wound care, not just a
plaster from a pharmacy.

Which hospital for a
motorbike accident?
The right hospital depends entirely on how serious the injury is.
Getting this match right is the single most useful decision after a
crash.
Major trauma — head injury, multiple fractures, internal
bleeding, loss of consciousness. Speed to a facility with full
ICU, imaging, and surgical capacity is what matters. Prof.
Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar is the province’s main
referral and trauma centre. Large private hospitals —
Siloam and Kasih Ibu — also run
24-hour emergency departments capable of handling serious trauma.
Serious but stable — fractures, deep lacerations, significant
road rash, suspected concussion that is being monitored.
International-facing private hospitals such as BIMC
(Kuta and Nusa Dua) are designed around foreign patients, with
English-speaking staff, clean modern facilities, and streamlined
insurance handling. This is where most travellers with a
nasty-but-not-critical crash are best served.
Minor — small grazes, a sprained wrist, superficial
cuts. A reputable clinic or a private hospital’s outpatient
department will clean and dress wounds properly and check for hidden
fractures, at a fraction of an ER cost.
Because the “right” choice shifts with severity, our independent
Bali hospital
guide for foreigners compares each option, and a
coordinator can make the call in real time based on what you
describe.
What happens at admission
Foreigners are often caught off guard by the admissions process. Here
is the typical sequence at a private hospital:
- Triage — a nurse assesses severity; serious cases
jump the queue. - Registration — passport required; you will be asked
how you intend to pay. - Deposit or guarantee of payment — private hospitals
commonly ask for an upfront deposit or an insurance
guarantee before proceeding with anything beyond immediate emergency
stabilisation. This can run into the millions of rupiah for surgery or
admission. Our guide on the hospital deposit for
foreigners explains what is refundable and how to handle
it. - Imaging and treatment — X-rays or CT scans, wound
cleaning, casting, stitching, or surgery as needed.
This deposit-and-billing stage is where a coordinator earns their
keep. We contact your insurer or their 24-hour assistance line to
request a cashless guarantee so you are not funding a
fracture repair from your travel budget, and we sit between you and the
hospital’s international desk so the paperwork does not become your
problem while you are hurt.
The insurance reality after
a crash
Two hard truths every rider should know:
- Many travel policies exclude motorbike accidents
unless you hold a valid motorcycle licence from your home country
and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle
category, and were wearing a helmet. Riding illegally can void your
cover entirely. - Foreign travel insurance is often
reimbursement-based. You may need to pay first and claim later
unless a cashless arrangement is set up quickly with the insurer’s
assistance company.
We help you understand where you stand, gather the documentation the
insurer will demand (police report, medical report, receipts), and push
for a direct-billing arrangement where your policy allows it. See our
insurance liaison for
Bali hospitals for how that works.
What
happens next — recovery, records, and getting home
Once treated, three practical issues follow a crash:
- Follow-up care. Fractures need review; road rash
needs monitoring for infection. If you are travelling on, telemedicine
follow-up after leaving a Bali hospital keeps a doctor in
the loop. - Medical records. You will need a discharge summary
and records for your insurer and your doctor at home — here is
how to
get your records from a Bali hospital. - Fitness to fly. After a head injury, surgery, or a
cast, do not assume you can board a flight. Airlines have rules, and in
some cases a medical
escort or evacuation is needed. A doctor and your insurer
should confirm you are fit to travel.
